Wow, what a fantastic day. The sun was out; the ocean was shimmering, I couldn’t ask for anything more.
It’s starting to get quite a bit warmer as I head south. I’ve been leaving at around 6:00 am and arriving at the next destination around 12:00 pm, but I may need to try and head out even earlier to avoid some of the heat.
I’ve been wearing track pants over my padded bike shorts, but I may soon have to go just bike shorts (sorry guys, not posting any photos of that).
I just had a light snack before leaving this morning, so after getting about 25 miles in, I got pretty hungry. I pulled up my GPS to see if I could find a place to stop and grab a quick bite. There was a place called Tasty Katy’s (which I’m still not entirely sure what kind of establishment it was), but I opted instead of a small, hometown diner.
I grabbed a pretty big breakfast with one of my many Achilles’ heels, chicken fried steak - perfect bike riding food. Side note, I feel like I’ve gained some weight on this trip so far even though I’m exercising like 6 hours every morning.
The coast line was absolutely gorgeous today on the route to Gold Beach. Here are a couple of shots I took.
And also a quick video.
So, I’m at a bit of an impasse. Pretty soon I’ll need to decide on the route. I can either go the Highway 1 route or the Highway 101 route. Highway 1 is going to be right along the coast pretty much the whole time, whereas Highway 101 is more inland, so the views would be better. However, since I’m mostly staying at Airbnb and motels along the way and not camping, places to stay are pretty sparse on Highway 1 and dealing with the closure could be problematic. At this point, I think I’m leaning towards going more inland, but I haven’t made a final decision.
